Linda A. Doll, aws, nws Sketch-Journal Class - Supply List
I have very few items that I consider important. I feel you should work with the materials you are most comfortable with. I have a studio full of brushes, palettes, etc which I hardly ever use. Most of my paintings are completed with two or three brushes and two, three or four colors. Especially for travel workshops I like to travel very light! Email me at Linda@lindadoll.com if you have any questions.
We will be sketching on location everyday so below is a few suggestions of things to bring.
SKETCHBOOK: I will be using a Komtrak Inspiral Refillable Watercolor Sketch Book, size 5 1/2" x 8 1/2". Available from Komtrak.com or many art stores but you may use any sketchbook that you enjoy. To this book I will be adding sketch/journaling paper also available from Komtrak.
BRUSHES: Brushes are very personal so use the brushes you prefer or already own. I prefer the Robert Simmons Water Color Rounds #RS785 in sizes 10 or 12 but again bring any small travel brush you like. We will only be adding color notes to our sketches not doing full paintings so a full set of brushes will not be needed.
PAPER: You can bring some small (1/8 or 1/4 size) wc paper if you prefer to use watercolor paper instead of doing all your sketches in the sketchbook. This is entirely up to you but working in the sketchbook only is fine with me.
PALETTES: Any small portable palette would be fine for this class. A small plastic “day of the week” pill box works great and is small and lightweight. I fill the palette with the paint several days before I travel and let them dry so that they don’t spill.
PIGMENT: I use Professional Grade Winsor & Newton Permanent Rose, Winsor Blue (Green Shade) and Winsor Lemon or Winsor Yellow or Transparent Yellow. Any other pigment you like will be fine but for new painters or painters wanting to learn to travel light, these three will be all you will actually need.
MISC.: Additional supplies you might need: Scotch Tape Fine Point Felt Tip Pens (Pigma Micron 05, Sharpie Ultra Fine, Staedler Lumocolor etc in black or in any color you choose) Eraser (White soft or kneaded) Small personal pack of Tissue or two Small water bottle (8 oz OK)
HAT OR VISOR & SUNGLASSES: (Travel Workshop) A hat or visor and sunglasses for sketching outdoors.
STOOL: Lightweight Camp stool if you prefer to sketch sitting down.
CAMERA: (Travel Workshop) A camera is a very handy second sketchbook. Bring enough film. Put new batteries in your camera or have a back up set with you. I have now started using a digital camera—the Nikon D80 and am very pleased with the results. I usually have my lap top computer with me so I can see all my photos each night back at the hotel.
Other items: (Travel Workshop) a small flashlight, alarm clock, sun tan lotion, & bug repellent
Craft Shops have wonderful decals for letters and colorful images as well as fun stamps. I’ll have some with me for you to use but you may also want to check out your nearby craft store for additional goodies. I’ll also have several scissors that cut wonderful borders for journal memorabilia for you to use as well as some other surprises.
*** When traveling it’s best not to wear expensive jewelry so please leave all good “stuff” at home.
